Tune-Ups That Actually Bring Back The Performance

A modern tune-up isn't points and a distributor cap anymore — it's spark plugs at the right gap, healthy coils, clean injectors, a clean throttle body, and current PCM software. Done right, a tune-up restores lost MPG, smooths out idle, and brings back the power you had when the vehicle was new. Backed by the Supercanic network warranty.

Our Test, Diagnose & Repair Process

01

Baseline Scan & Live Data Review

Before we touch anything we scan the vehicle, document codes, and look at long-term fuel trims, ignition timing, and misfire counters. This tells us if there's already a problem to address — not just a routine tune.

02

Pull & Inspect Existing Spark Plugs

We pull at least one or two plugs (or all of them) and inspect: gap, color, electrode wear, and any signs of oil fouling, coolant intrusion, or detonation. Plug condition tells the truth about each cylinder.

03

Replace Plugs To Spec & Properly Gapped

Plugs gapped to manufacturer spec — many modern iridium plugs are pre-gapped but should still be verified. Anti-seize on plugs that call for it, not on plugs that don't (Ford modular V8s, for example, do not get anti-seize). Torqued to spec.

04

Inspect & Replace Coils, Wires As Needed

We test ignition coils with a scope where indicated. Failing coils get replaced — usually the worst one first, but on high-mileage vehicles we recommend all of them. Wires (where applicable) inspected and replaced if cracked, burnt, or high-resistance.

05

Throttle Body & Intake Cleaning

Carbon buildup in the throttle body causes rough idle and slow throttle response. We clean it properly (off the vehicle on heavily fouled ones, on-vehicle for routine maintenance). Direct-injection engines may need walnut-blast carbon cleaning at higher mileage.

06

Verify, Road Test & Document

Clear codes, drive the vehicle through a full drive cycle, watch live data, and confirm misfire counts at zero and fuel trims back to normal. You see the before/after.

How We Get It Right

What We Use

  • Spark Plug Gappers & Torque Wrenches — Proper gap, proper torque. Over-tightening cracks porcelain; under-tightening lets compression escape.
  • Coil Tester / Lab Scope — Catches weak coils that test 'OK' but fail under load.
  • Compression Tester — If a cylinder is misfiring and new plugs/coils don't fix it, compression test tells us if there's bigger trouble.
  • Fuel Injector Cleaner Bench (For Severe Cases) — Off-vehicle ultrasonic cleaning when injectors are heavily clogged.
  • Throttle Body Cleaning Kit — Proper cleaners and procedures — including the throttle relearn many vehicles need after cleaning.
  • OE Scan Tool For Relearns — Many vehicles require an idle relearn after throttle body cleaning. We have the tools for every major make.

What We Install

  • Iridium & Platinum Spark Plugs — NGK, Denso, AC Delco, Motorcraft — OE plug for your engine. We don't substitute.
  • Ignition Coils — OEM or OE-equivalent (Denso, Delphi, Bosch). Cheap aftermarket coils fail in 20,000 miles.
  • Ignition Wires — Where applicable — NGK, Magnecor, or OEM. Resistance-tested before install.
  • Fuel Injectors — OE Bosch, Denso, Siemens. Flow-matched on performance applications.
  • Air Filters — K&N, OEM, or upgraded depending on customer preference.
  • Cabin Air Filters — Often skipped, often filthy. Replace at every tune-up.

★ Common Questions ★

Frequently Asked

How often does my vehicle need a tune-up?
Iridium plugs: 100,000 miles is the manufacturer interval. We often see them needing replacement sooner in heavy-traffic, short-trip driving. Coils typically last 100k+ but fail individually.
Will a tune-up fix my check engine light?
Sometimes — if the light is misfire-related and caused by worn plugs or coils, yes. If it's something else (O2 sensor, vacuum leak, fuel system), no. We diagnose first.
Do I need premium fuel?
Only if your owner's manual says 'premium required.' 'Premium recommended' means the engine will run on regular but may make slightly less power. 'Regular' means save your money.
Does fuel system cleaner really work?
Top-tier branded gasoline (Chevron, Shell, 76) already contains detergents. Bottled additives can help mildly fouled injectors but won't fix a real problem. Severe clogs need professional cleaning.
My MPG is way down. Will a tune-up fix it?
Maybe. Worn plugs, dirty MAF, vacuum leaks, low tire pressure, dragging brakes, and bad O2 sensors are the top causes of lost MPG. We diagnose to find the actual cause instead of guessing.
